The right order for your skincare

The right order for your skincare

How to layer your skincare correctly without overcomplicating it?

One of the most common reasons skincare doesn’t work is not the products themselves, but the order they are used in.

Layering can feel confusing. Toner or serum first? What goes after what? And how many steps are actually necessary?

The truth is, it doesn’t need to be complicated.

A simple structure is usually enough to get better results.

Why layering matters

Each product has a role. When applied in the right order, they support each other and absorb properly into the skin.

When applied in the wrong order, they can become less effective — or simply sit on the surface without doing much.

Layering correctly helps your skin get the full benefit of each step.

The correct order (simplified)

Instead of thinking in terms of products, think in terms of texture and function.

A simple rule:

go from light to heavy

In practice, that looks like this:

- Cleanser
- Toner or essence
- Serum or treatment
- Moisturiser
- Sunscreen (morning)

This structure works for most skin types and concerns.

Do you need all steps?

Not necessarily.

A common mistake is thinking more steps = better results.

In reality, a routine only works if you can stay consistent with it.

For some people, a 3-step routine is enough. For others, 4–5 steps work better.

The key is not the number of steps, but whether each one has a clear purpose.

Common layering mistakes

Using too many active ingredients at once
Mixing products without understanding their role
Changing products too often
Skipping moisturiser or sunscreen

These small mistakes can prevent your routine from working as intended.

A better way to think about your routine

Instead of building your routine product by product, it can be easier to follow a structure that already makes sense.

Cleanse → hydrate → treat → protect

When each step has a role, layering becomes simple and automatic.
